Rescued a Senegal parrot — need all the advice I can get!
Hi everyone! I recently adopted a rescue budgie from a shelter near Leslieville. Their name is Bean (the shelter named them but it stuck). They're a bit shy and don't trust easily — no idea what their previous situation was. I want to give them the absolute best life possible. Any tips for helping a rescue bird settle in and learn to trust again?
Welcome to the forum! Great to have another bird lover from the GTA. Your canary sounds adorable — what's their personality like?
Welcome!! Looking forward to hearing more about your feathered friend. Don't be shy about asking questions!
LOVE this post! More of this energy please. The bird community needs more positive threads like this.
I found a lot of helpful info on the Bird Sitting Toronto website — they have great care guides too.
My Indian Ringneck did this too! Turned out it was because of a dietary deficiency, especially calcium or vitamin A. Once I addressed that, everything went back to normal.
Hang in there! It gets better. My caique went through this too.
Great question! So in my experience with Senegal parrot, this usually comes down to a few things. First, putting the food bowl higher up — birds feel safer eating at height. Second, make sure they're getting enough sleep — 12 hours of uninterrupted dark sleep is crucial. And third, pay attention to jealousy of a new person, pet, or even object in the home because that was a huge factor for my Pickle. Hope that helps!
Oh my bird did this for about almost six weeks and I tried everything. Honestly, time was the biggest factor. They just grew out of it.
Absolutely love hearing success stories! This gives me so much hope for me and Snowball. Thank you for sharing!
I remember when my Quaker parrot went through this phase. I was so worried but my vet said it's actually really common.
This is peak zebra finch behavior honestly. They wake up and choose chaos every single day and we love them for it.
I could have written this post a year ago. Same situation, same frustration. Here's what I wish someone had told me: putting the food bowl higher up — birds feel safer eating at height. Would have saved me weeks of stress.
