Hey welcome! You'll love this community. Feel free to ask anything, everyone here is super helpful!
There's a great bird supply store in Hamilton that carries exactly what you need. I go there all the time.
Noticed a small red bump on my Eclectus's foot. Could this be bumblefoot? I have varied perch sizes but maybe not enough natural wood. What should I do? Is this a vet emergency or can I treat at home?
Have you noticed any other changes? When my Indian Ringneck did this they were also sitting at the bottom of the cage.
So what I ended up doing was target training first, then building up to step-up. Within a few days there was a noticeable improvement. Definitely worth trying.
PSA for anyone who doesn't know β nonstick pans can KILL birds. I found out the hard way when I accidentally overheated a pan and my green cheek conure got sick. Thankfully caught it in time. Please, if you have birds, switch to stainless steel or cast iron.
One thing that really helped was offering chop first thing in the morning when they're hungriest. Give it a try β can't hurt!
Which avian vet do you go to? I'm looking for a good one near Milton.
Check out PetSmart β they have exactly what you need and the prices are reasonable for the GTA.
My canary destroys every store-bought toy in an hour. I need cheap DIY ideas that provide at least a few hours of entertainment. What do you make at home? Budget-friendly ideas especially welcome!
So I had this exact problem about a year ago. Let me share what I learned. The key thing is using a shower perch so they can bathe with warm mist. A lot of people also recommend rotating toys weekly so they always have something "new". My avian vet in Barrie also suggested checking for hormonal season β spring is brutal which can sometimes be an underlying factor. Good luck β feel free to DM me if you have questions!
Dealt with this for months. What finally worked was changing the cage location in the room and just being really patient. They come around eventually.
Just wanted to come back and say the advice in this thread WORKED. My canary finally stopped chewing furniture during out-of-cage time after I tried putting the food bowl higher up β birds feel safer eating at height.
Hang in there! It gets better. My budgie went through this too.
It took me a while to figure this out with my bird too. Don't be too hard on yourself β you're learning!
Can we start a support group for this? Because SAME.
I remember when my Quaker parrot went through this phase. I was so worried but my vet said it's actually really common.
My Hahn's macaw did this too! Turned out it was because of a dietary deficiency, especially calcium or vitamin A. Once I addressed that, everything went back to normal.
Have you tried switching to stainless steel water bowls and changing water twice daily? That's what solved this issue for us. Game changer honestly.
How long have you had them? Sometimes it takes a while for birds to settle into a new home.
