I got mine from Pet Valu in Scarborough. Great selection and the staff actually knows about birds.
Every evening, Biscuit flips upside down in my hand, goes completely limp, and closes their eyes. The first time they did this I PANICKED and almost called the emergency vet. Turns out they just... like being held upside down? lovebird are so weird. Does your bird have a weird quirk?
My canary did this too! Turned out it was because of hormonal season β spring is brutal. Once I addressed that, everything went back to normal.
Welcome to the forum! Great to have another bird lover from the GTA. Your zebra finch sounds adorable β what's their personality like?
This is one of those topics where I think there genuinely is no right answer. Both sides have valid points.
My vet in Ajax suggested rearranging the cage every couple weeks to prevent boredom and I noticed a change within the first week. Highly recommend.
I got mine from Amazon Canada in Scarborough. Great selection and the staff actually knows about birds.
'Who's the prettiest baby in the world? You are!' 'Don't eat that, it's my lunch.' 'Why are you like this?' 'I love you more than most humans.' 'Please stop screaming, the neighbours are going to call someone.' Just normal bird owner things right? RIGHT?
My advice would be adding a full-spectrum Arcadia UV light near the cage. Went through the same thing with my Quaker parrot last year.
I've been researching Amazon parrot for months and I think I'm ready. But I want honest opinions from actual owners. What do you wish you'd known before getting yours? What's the hardest part? What's the best part?
Nice to meet you! Always great to connect with fellow bird owners. You're going to fit right in here!
So I had this exact problem about a year ago. Let me share what I learned. The key thing is putting treats inside paper cups, folded paper, or tissue for foraging. A lot of people also recommend giving warm food (like a warmed mash) on cold Toronto mornings. My avian vet in Liberty Village also suggested checking for a dietary deficiency, especially calcium or vitamin A which can sometimes be an underlying factor. Good luck β feel free to DM me if you have questions!
Reading this hit home. My Pionus went through the same phase around the same age. What helped us was putting the food bowl higher up β birds feel safer eating at height. Also just accepting that birds are gonna bird, you know?
This reminds me of when I first got Pistachio. I was so overwhelmed but looking back, those early days were actually really special. The bond building phase is tough but beautiful.
I switched to TOP's pellets last year and haven't looked back. My blue and gold macaw's feathers have never looked better.
I switched to Goldenfeast last year and haven't looked back. My Hahn's macaw's feathers have never looked better.
Switched from Harrison's to Roudybush about a month ago. Here's my honest take: my Indian Ringneck likes the taste way more (actually eats it willingly vs throwing it on the floor). Consistency of droppings improved. Feather quality seems about the same. Price is comparable. Overall I'd give it a solid 8/10. Anyone else tried this brand?
If you're in Liberty Village, check out the avian vet on Hurontario St. They're amazing with budgie specifically.
Great question! So in my experience with Senegal parrot, this usually comes down to a few things. First, putting the food bowl higher up β birds feel safer eating at height. Second, make sure they're getting enough sleep β 12 hours of uninterrupted dark sleep is crucial. And third, pay attention to jealousy of a new person, pet, or even object in the home because that was a huge factor for my Pickle. Hope that helps!
