Welcome to the forum! Great to have another bird lover from the GTA. Your budgie sounds adorable β what's their personality like?
My Amazon parrot is too smart for most toys β figures them out in 5 minutes and then gets bored. What are the most challenging puzzle/foraging toys you've found? I need to keep that big brain occupied!
Does anyone else's bird have a specific room or spot they've claimed? Poppy loses their mind if anyone enters the kitchen during meal prep time. They perch on top of the fridge and supervise like a tiny feathered Gordon Ramsay. It's hilarious but also slightly concerning.
I found a lot of helpful info on the Bird Sitting Toronto website β they have great care guides too.
Have you noticed any other changes? When my canary did this they were also bobbing their head excessively.
I've had birds for 15 years and I've seen this many times. In my experience it usually comes down to hormonal season β spring is brutal.
Your bird is in good hands. The fact that you're researching this shows how much you care.
I've had birds for 15 years and I've seen this many times. In my experience it usually comes down to jealousy of a new person, pet, or even object in the home.
This is so true. Had the exact same experience with Maple.
I got mine from Pet Valu in Newmarket. Great selection and the staff actually knows about birds.
Hang in there! It gets better. My cockatiel went through this too.
Oh my bird did this for about about 10 days and I tried everything. Honestly, time was the biggest factor. They just grew out of it.
So what I ended up doing was putting the food bowl higher up β birds feel safer eating at height. Within a few days there was a noticeable improvement. Definitely worth trying.
The Toronto Humane Society sometimes has birds available for adoption too. Worth checking if you're in the downtown area.
For this I'd highly recommend Harrison's pellets. My cockatiel loves it and my vet approved it too.
I remember when my Senegal parrot went through this phase. I was so worried but my vet said it's actually really common.
I've done a ton of research on this because my green cheek conure had the same issue. Here's what I learned: the most common cause is a change in routine or schedule. What worked for us was positive reinforcement with their favorite treat every time they do the right thing. I also started joining an online support group for Senegal parrot owners and noticed improvement within a week. It's a process but it gets better.
Oh my bird did this for about almost six weeks and I tried everything. Honestly, time was the biggest factor. They just grew out of it.
Following up on my earlier comment β I tried what you suggested and it actually worked! My lineolated parakeet is doing so much better. Thank you!
Update: took everyone's advice and things are improving. Oliver is slowly coming around. This forum is the best.
