So what I ended up doing was keeping a super consistent daily routine β birds thrive on predictability. Within a few days there was a noticeable improvement. Definitely worth trying.
I know how stressful this can be. Just know you're not alone and most of us have been through something similar.
I knew parrots lived long but I just looked up actual documented lifespans and some lineolated parakeet have lived over 40 years in captivity. My Luna could outlive me. Has anyone here actually thought about a plan for their bird if something happens to them? This just got real.
There's a great little shop in the Danforth that specializes in parrot supplies. Way better selection than the big chains.
Oh my bird did this for about over a month and I tried everything. Honestly, time was the biggest factor. They just grew out of it.
I've done a ton of research on this because my green cheek conure had the same issue. Here's what I learned: the most common cause is jealousy of a new person, pet, or even object in the home. What worked for us was getting natural java wood perches from a specialty bird store. I also started reading "The Parrot Problem Solver" by Barbara Heidenreich and noticed improvement within a week. It's a process but it gets better.
Great question! So in my experience with Senegal parrot, this usually comes down to a few things. First, positive reinforcement with their favorite treat every time they do the right thing. Second, make sure they're getting enough sleep β 12 hours of uninterrupted dark sleep is crucial. And third, pay attention to the cage being in a high-traffic or drafty location because that was a huge factor for my Luna. Hope that helps!
Bookmarking this thread! So much great info. This is why I keep coming back to this forum.
Nice to meet you! Always great to connect with fellow bird owners. You're going to fit right in here!

Been thinking about adopting a rescue instead of buying from a breeder. Any experiences with rescue birds in Ontario? What should I expect in terms of behavioral challenges? Which rescue organizations do you recommend?
Just joined! I have a beautiful Senegal parrot named Sky and we live in Liberty Village. I spend way too much time talking to my bird and taking photos of them. Looking to learn more about bird care, nutrition, and training from people who actually know what they're talking about. Nice to meet you all!
PSA for anyone who doesn't know β nonstick pans can KILL birds. I found out the hard way when I accidentally overheated a pan and my caique got sick. Thankfully caught it in time. Please, if you have birds, switch to stainless steel or cast iron.
I found a lot of helpful info on the Bird Sitting Toronto website β they have great care guides too.
lovebird owner from North York checking in! Pickle is 5 years old.
Bought a toy with really vibrant dyed wood pieces. Now I'm second-guessing if the dyes are bird-safe. How do you tell? Is there a list of safe toy materials I should reference? I don't want to risk it.
What does their diet look like? Sometimes these things are diet-related.
This is so true. Had the exact same experience with Skittles.
Great question! So in my experience with blue and gold macaw, this usually comes down to a few things. First, playing music during the day β my bird loves calm acoustic guitar. Second, make sure they're getting enough sleep β 12 hours of uninterrupted dark sleep is crucial. And third, pay attention to the cage being in a high-traffic or drafty location because that was a huge factor for my Luna. Hope that helps!
