Noticed a small red bump on my cockatiel's foot. Could this be bumblefoot? I have varied perch sizes but maybe not enough natural wood. What should I do? Is this a vet emergency or can I treat at home?

Hey there! Just a quick heads-up—you mentioned "parrotlet" in the title but "cockatiel" in your post, so I’ll assume we’re talking about your cockatiel unless you clarify otherwise. Either way, a red bump on the foot deserves attention, so thanks for catching it early.

A small red bump could be the very beginning of bumblefoot (pododermatitis), which is essentially a pressure sore that can become infected. At this early stage—just redness without swelling, open sores, or bleeding—it’s usually not an emergency, but it does need prompt action to prevent it from progressing. You can start with home care: apply a thin layer of vet wrap or padded bandaging to the perches to reduce pressure (not too tight!), and give your bird more soft, irregular surfaces like

I joined a bird owners meetup group in the GTA — great way to get in-person advice and let the birds socialize. Check Facebook groups!

Your bird is in good hands. The fact that you're researching this shows how much you care.

This happened to us last winter. I think the shorter days and dry heated air were the cause for my bird.

So I had this exact problem about a year ago. Let me share what I learned. The key thing is clicker training for 10-15 minutes a day. A lot of people also recommend reading "The Parrot Problem Solver" by Barbara Heidenreich. My avian vet in Newmarket also suggested checking for the cage being in a high-traffic or drafty location which can sometimes be an underlying factor. Good luck — feel free to DM me if you have questions!
