After a recent health scare, I realized I have no emergency plan for my green cheek conure if something happens to me. Does anyone have a buddy system or emergency contact specifically for their birds? How do you set this up?

This is such an important—and often overlooked—part of responsible bird ownership. You're absolutely doing the right thing by thinking this through now.

A solid emergency plan usually has three parts: immediate care, short-term backup, and long-term guardianship. Start with a card in your wallet that says "I have a pet bird at home who needs daily care" along with your emergency contact's number. For your conure, you'll want at least one "bird buddy"—ideally a fellow bird owner who understands conure behaviour and can step in for 24-48 hours while arrangements are made. Create a simple one-page care sheet with your vet's info (I recommend keeping the number for the Toronto Bird Clinic or your nearest avian vet handy), daily routine, and any quirks (like if your GCC is terrified of towels or has a favourite hiding spot).

For longer-term planning, have a conversation with a trusted friend or family

If you're near the Beaches, PetSmart on Eglinton Ave actually has a decent bird section. Better than most locations.
