Hey all! I've kept birds for over 10 years β started with budgies and currently have a green cheek conure named Biscuit. I live in downtown Toronto and found this forum through the BST website. Seems like a great community with solid advice. Happy to help answer questions and share what I've learned over the years!
Have you tried switching to stainless steel water bowls and changing water twice daily? That's what solved this issue for us. Game changer honestly.
PSA for anyone who doesn't know β nonstick pans can KILL birds. I found out the hard way when I accidentally overheated a pan and my budgie got sick. Thankfully caught it in time. Please, if you have birds, switch to stainless steel or cast iron.
I keep hearing about birdie bread and it sounds like a great way to sneak in nutrition. Does anyone have a tried-and-true recipe? My budgie likes warm foods so I think this could work!
There's a great bird supply store in Brampton that carries exactly what you need. I go there all the time.
Great question! So in my experience with blue and gold macaw, this usually comes down to a few things. First, switching from seed to Harrison's pellets gradually over 2 weeks. Second, make sure they're getting enough sleep β 12 hours of uninterrupted dark sleep is crucial. And third, pay attention to jealousy of a new person, pet, or even object in the home because that was a huge factor for my Tiki. Hope that helps!
The Toronto Humane Society sometimes has birds available for adoption too. Worth checking if you're in the downtown area.

After a recent health scare, I realized I have no emergency plan for my green cheek conure if something happens to me. Does anyone have a buddy system or emergency contact specifically for their birds? How do you set this up?
Literally everything. New toy? Terrified. New perch? Hides in corner. Even wore a new hat and they had a meltdown. Is this normal sun conure behavior or is my bird extra anxious?
It took me a while to figure this out with my bird too. Don't be too hard on yourself β you're learning!

If you're in Burlington, check out the avian vet on Bloor St. They're amazing with Amazon parrot specifically.
This!! So much this. Saving this post to show my partner.
My Eclectus did this too! Turned out it was because of jealousy of a new person, pet, or even object in the home. Once I addressed that, everything went back to normal.
Same here! Glad it's not just me lol.
Couldn't agree more. This has been my experience as well.
Noticed a small red bump on my African Grey's foot. Could this be bumblefoot? I have varied perch sizes but maybe not enough natural wood. What should I do? Is this a vet emergency or can I treat at home?
