Travelling with a African Grey in the GTA
Need to drive my Senegal parrot from Etobicoke to a vet appointment downtown. They've never been in a car before and I'm nervous. What travel cage do you recommend? Any tips to keep them calm?
Couldn't agree more. This has been my experience as well.
First, a quick clarification since your title mentions an African Grey but your post says Senegal parrotβthese are quite different sizes, so you'll want to choose accordingly! A Senegal needs a small-to-medium hard-sided carrier (like a Petmate Sky Kennel or similar airline-approved style), while an African Grey would need a medium-to-large one. For either bird, go with hard plastic rather than soft-sided for car safety, and always secure the carrier with a seatbelt in the back seatβnever the front, due to airbag risks.
To keep them calm, drape a light towel over three sides of the carrier to block the scary moving scenery while leaving the front or top uncovered for airflow. Add a familiar perch and a small comfort toy inside so they have something secure to grip. Skip food and water for about an hour before the drive to prevent motion sickness, and keep the cabin quietβno loud music or open windows. Since you're traveling from Etobicoke to downtown, try to avoid rush hour if possible; the stop-and-go traffic on the Gardiner or QEW is much more stressful for birds than smooth highway driving.
Make sure the car is already at a comfortable temperature before putting them in, as Toronto's weather can swing quickly and parked cars become dangerous fast. If your bird needs extra quiet time to recover after the vet visit, or if you find yourself needing regular transport help, Bird Sitting Toronto offers specialized care for post-appointment recovery. What tricks have worked for the rest of you when driving parrots across the GTA? Any favourite carriers or calming rituals to share?
This is such a great thread! I shared it with my local bird group. More people need to see this forum.
