Hi everyone! I recently adopted a rescue lovebird from a shelter near Vaughan. Their name is Tango (the shelter named them but it stuck). They're a bit shy and don't trust easily β no idea what their previous situation was. I want to give them the absolute best life possible. Any tips for helping a rescue bird settle in and learn to trust again?
I struggled with this too until I started positive reinforcement with their favorite treat every time they do the right thing. Now it's like a completely different bird.
Posted a few weeks ago about Rio needing surgery. Just wanted to update everyone β the surgery went well and Sunny is recovering at home! The vet in High Park was incredible. Thank you all for the support and good vibes. This community is the best.
I literally cried. After about 10 days of patient work, Maple finally flew to me from across the room today. I know it sounds small but if you've been through the bonding process with a nervous bird you know how HUGE this is. Never give up, it's so worth it.
I just snorted coffee out of my nose reading this. My Amazon parrot is looking at me like I've lost it.
Anyone near High Park should check out the bird section at Pet Valu β surprisingly good for the area.
Hi! I'm new here but definitely not new to birds. My Indian Ringneck Jade has been my companion for 10 years and I honestly can't imagine life without them. Just moved to High Park recently and looking to connect with other bird owners in the area. Happy to be here!
So what I ended up doing was adding a full-spectrum Arcadia UV light near the cage. Within a few days there was a noticeable improvement. Definitely worth trying.
Totally agree with this! My Hahn's macaw is exactly the same way.
Every evening, Snowball flips upside down in my hand, goes completely limp, and closes their eyes. The first time they did this I PANICKED and almost called the emergency vet. Turns out they just... like being held upside down? parrotlet are so weird. Does your bird have a weird quirk?
Been thinking about this thread all week. I've tried a few of the suggestions and getting natural java wood perches from a specialty bird store was the game changer for us.
This happened to us last winter. I think the shorter days and dry heated air were the cause for my bird.
I remember when my Quaker parrot went through this phase. I was so worried but my vet said it's actually really common.
Check out PetSmart β they have exactly what you need and the prices are reasonable for the GTA.
Started clicker training Skittles this week and I'm amazed. Day 1: confused. Day 3: clicked the connection between click and treat. Day 5: touching the target stick reliably. Day 7: stepping up on command. This is genuinely incredible. Anyone else clicker train their birds?
Hi everyone! I recently adopted a rescue Amazon parrot from a shelter near downtown Toronto. Their name is Tango (the shelter named them but it stuck). They're a bit shy and don't trust easily β no idea what their previous situation was. I want to give them the absolute best life possible. Any tips for helping a rescue bird settle in and learn to trust again?
Which avian vet do you go to? I'm looking for a good one near Milton.
Oh my bird did this for about a couple weeks and I tried everything. Honestly, time was the biggest factor. They just grew out of it.
Have you noticed any other changes? When my zebra finch did this they were also being more vocal than normal.
100% this. Wish I'd known this when I first got my bird.
