Rescued a Hahn's macaw — need all the advice I can get!
Hi everyone! I recently adopted a rescue green cheek conure from a shelter near Scarborough. Their name is Pistachio (the shelter named them but it stuck). They're a bit shy and don't trust easily — no idea what their previous situation was. I want to give them the absolute best life possible. Any tips for helping a rescue bird settle in and learn to trust again?
Welcome to the forum! Great to have another bird lover from the GTA. Your Quaker parrot sounds adorable — what's their personality like?
Welcome!! Looking forward to hearing more about your feathered friend. Don't be shy about asking questions!
One thing that really helped was switching to stainless steel water bowls and changing water twice daily. Give it a try — can't hurt!
Bird Sitting Toronto has a great blog with articles on this topic actually. Worth checking out!
Okay but counterpoint — what about birds that are the complete opposite? My Quaker parrot breaks every rule lol.

I switched to Hagen Tropican last year and haven't looked back. My lineolated parakeet's feathers have never looked better.
I actually disagree with this. In my experience with my zebra finch, the opposite was true. But I know every bird is different.
There's a great bird supply store in North York that carries exactly what you need. I go there all the time.
I've tried a bunch of brands and Lafeber NutriBerries is hands down the best value. My Pistachio devours it.
Just wanted to come back and say the advice in this thread WORKED. My umbrella cockatoo finally stopped being afraid of hands after I tried clicker training for 10-15 minutes a day.
