Been thinking about adopting a rescue instead of buying from a breeder. Any experiences with rescue birds in Ontario? What should I expect in terms of behavioral challenges? Which rescue organizations do you recommend?

Okay but counterpoint β€” what about birds that are the complete opposite? My canary breaks every rule lol.

Revisiting this thread because I have more info now. After talking to my vet, they confirmed exactly what people here said. This community knows their stuff.

My parrotlet did this too! Turned out it was because of a dietary deficiency, especially calcium or vitamin A. Once I addressed that, everything went back to normal.

There's a great little shop in the Danforth that specializes in parrot supplies. Way better selection than the big chains.

I switched to Zupreem last year and haven't looked back. My budgie's feathers have never looked better.

So I had this exact problem about a year ago. Let me share what I learned. The key thing is switching from seed to Harrison's pellets gradually over 2 weeks. A lot of people also recommend reading "The Parrot Problem Solver" by Barbara Heidenreich. My avian vet in Scarborough also suggested checking for dry winter air from forced-air heating which can sometimes be an underlying factor. Good luck β€” feel free to DM me if you have questions!

One thing that really helped was putting a bird lamp on a 12/12 timer to simulate natural daylight cycles. Give it a try β€” can't hurt!
