Interesting take! I see your point but I've had a completely different experience. My Senegal parrot actually...
My budgie picked up a word I DEFINITELY didn't teach them. I suspect my teenager. Is there any way to untrain a word? I have guests coming over and I'm mortified. Or do I just accept my fate?
I could have written this post a year ago. Same situation, same frustration. Here's what I wish someone had told me: using a shower perch so they can bathe with warm mist. Would have saved me weeks of stress.
Welcome to the forum! Great to have another bird lover from the GTA. Your Amazon parrot sounds adorable β what's their personality like?
I switched to Harrison's pellets last year and haven't looked back. My parrotlet's feathers have never looked better.
YES! This is exactly what I needed to read today. My Pionus and I have been going through the same thing!
My Tweety went through a phase like this around 1 year. I was terrified but it passed. Birds are weird sometimes lol.
What worked for me was removing mirrors from the cage β can cause hormonal or aggressive behavior. Took about a week but my Hahn's macaw responded really well to it.
Oh my bird did this for about two to three weeks and I tried everything. Honestly, time was the biggest factor. They just grew out of it.
Great question! So in my experience with Eclectus, this usually comes down to a few things. First, covering the cage partially at night for 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep. Second, make sure they're getting enough sleep β 12 hours of uninterrupted dark sleep is crucial. And third, pay attention to dry winter air from forced-air heating because that was a huge factor for my Noodle. Hope that helps!
Hang in there! It gets better. My green cheek conure went through this too.
So what I ended up doing was spending at minimum 2 hours of supervised out-of-cage time daily. Within a few days there was a noticeable improvement. Definitely worth trying.

I actually disagree with this. In my experience with my canary, the opposite was true. But I know every bird is different.
Totally agree with this! My parrotlet is exactly the same way.
Which avian vet do you go to? I'm looking for a good one near Oshawa.
I literally cried. After two to three weeks of patient work, Paco finally came out of the cage on their own today. I know it sounds small but if you've been through the bonding process with a nervous bird you know how HUGE this is. Never give up, it's so worth it.
I got mine from Ren's Pets in Liberty Village. Great selection and the staff actually knows about birds.
Just wanted to come back and say the advice in this thread WORKED. My Hahn's macaw finally stopped refusing to go back in the cage after I tried putting a bird lamp on a 12/12 timer to simulate natural daylight cycles.
I struggled with this too until I started target training first, then building up to step-up. Now it's like a completely different bird.
