Foraging for beginners — how do I get my bird to actually start foraging?

I hear foraging is the #1 enrichment for birds, but when I hide food my lovebird just looks confused and gives up. How do I actually TEACH a bird to forage if they've only ever had food handed to them in a bowl?

This is such a common starting point — a bird used to a full bowl has no reason to suspect food can be 'found.' You teach it in tiny, confidence-building steps:

  1. Make it obvious: put a favourite treat in an open, clear container right beside the normal bowl. Let them succeed instantly.
  2. Add a tiny barrier: loosely cover it with a bit of paper they can nudge aside; crumple paper loosely over treats.
  3. Increase difficulty slowly: wrap treats in paper, use foraging boxes, hide in multiple spots — only after each stage is easy.
  4. Use high-value treats (something they adore, not bland pellets) so the effort pays off.
  5. Model it: 'forage' yourself so they copy their flockmate.

Never make it so hard they give up and go hungry — success breeds confidence. Once it clicks, foraging becomes the highlight of their day. Loads of ideas in creative enrichment for an active, happy parrot.

Start ridiculously easy. Put treats in an OPEN clear cup right next to the food bowl. Then loosely cover it. Then move it slightly. You're building the 'food can be hidden and I can get it' concept one tiny step at a time.

Use a high-value treat they LOVE (not pellets they're meh about) so the payoff is worth the effort. And forage alongside them at first — birds copy flockmates, so 'show' them by uncovering it yourself.
