I second the Toronto Centre for Avian and Exotic Medicine. Dr. McDonald and Dr. Speer are both excellent. Their staff are also very helpful. I've also heard good things about the Animal Hospital of High Park if you're closer to that side of the city, though I haven't personally used them for my conure.
My friend's green cheek has been napping more than usual during the daytime this week. Still eating and playing some, but the daytime sleeping seems increased. Is daytime sleeping a red flag or can it be normal?
I wrap nuts in newspaper pages for Mango. Also found that paper bags from the grocery store are amazing — stuff them with shredded paper and pellets and let them tear into it.
Mango has been on a seed mix his whole life and I now know pellets are healthier. But he flat-out ignores pellets — picks them out and throws them. How do I actually make this switch without starving him?
Use a high-value treat they LOVE (not pellets they're meh about) so the payoff is worth the effort. And forage alongside them at first — birds copy flockmates, so 'show' them by uncovering it yourself.
As the guy with the LOUD sun conure — yes, get the green cheek for a condo, not a sun. GCCs have a 'chuckle' more than a scream. Mine's cousin has a GCC in an apartment with zero complaints.
Mango (my sun conure) has been a bit fluffed up since this morning. He's eating his pellets and had some carrot but seems quieter than usual. Temperature in the apartment is normal, around 21°C. He had a vet check 2 months ago and was healthy. Is this normal or do I need to rush to the vet?
I have a sun conure (Mango) and my neighbour is considering getting a green cheek. She asked me how loud green cheeks are compared to suns. I told her green cheeks are much quieter but wanted to get community input. What's your experience?
Lovebirds are NOTORIOUS for this. Honestly I'd lean into it — destruction IS the enrichment. Buy in bulk and accept it. Dollar store wooden items (unpainted) work well if you need volume.
