My partner loves running an essential oil diffuser and burning scented candles. We just got budgies. Is any of this safe with birds in the home, or does it all have to go?

Agreed — airborne stuff is the danger people underestimate. Some essential oils are outright toxic to birds and even 'safe' ones aerosolize particles their lungs can't handle. Ventilation and fragrance-free is the way.

Birds have incredibly sensitive respiratory systems (the whole 'canary in a coal mine' thing is literal). I cut out diffusers, scented candles, plug-ins, and aerosols entirely once I got birds. Not worth the risk.

This is one of the most important things new bird owners learn, so I'm glad you asked before a problem: birds have extraordinarily efficient, sensitive respiratory systems, which is exactly why they're so vulnerable to airborne toxins.

The safe approach is to avoid essential oil diffusers, scented candles, plug-in air fresheners, and aerosol sprays in a home with birds. Some essential oils are directly toxic; even 'natural' ones release fine particles and VOCs that can damage avian lungs. There's no reliably 'safe dose' guidance, so fragrance-free is the standard.

For a fresh-smelling home: ventilation, washable surfaces, and bird-safe cleaning. We keep a full list in common household toxins deadly to birds and safe alternatives in bird-safe homemade household cleaners. Better safe than sorry with anything airborne.
