Best enrichment ideas for a bored, intelligent African grey?
Einstein gets bored FAST. Toys that entertain other birds for days, he solves in ten minutes and then ignores. What enrichment actually keeps a clever grey engaged?
Foraging that makes him WORK for food is king for smart birds. Hide food in wrapped paper, foraging boxes, puzzle feeders. Rotate toys weekly so they feel 'new.' And honestly — teaching him tricks/words is the best enrichment of all for a grey.
Greys are basically toddlers with bolt cutters. Novelty + problem-solving. I do 'foraging trays' with shredded paper and hidden almonds, and swap the toy lineup every few days so nothing gets stale.
African greys are arguably the most cognitively demanding companion parrots, so 'solves it in ten minutes' is exactly what you'd expect — the answer is novelty, difficulty, and food-based foraging.
Things that work well for clever greys:
- Foraging puzzles that hide food and escalate in difficulty
- Weekly toy rotation (store half the toys, swap them — 'new' again)
- Destructible foraging: food wrapped in paper, foraging boxes, skewered veg
- Training sessions: trick training and talking are mental workouts greys love and they double as bonding
