Unpopular opinion: seeds aren't the devil
I know pellets are the gold standard but I think the anti-seed narrative has gone way too far. My caique gets a balanced diet of pellets, fresh food, AND a small amount of quality seed mix. They're in perfect health. Seeds in moderation are FINE. Change my mind.
I've done a ton of research on this because my blue and gold macaw had the same issue. Here's what I learned: the most common cause is jealousy of a new person, pet, or even object in the home. What worked for us was adding a full-spectrum Arcadia UV light near the cage. I also started reading "The Parrot Problem Solver" by Barbara Heidenreich and noticed improvement within a week. It's a process but it gets better.
Birds are basically tiny dinosaurs with attitude. My Skittles has me completely trained at this point.
Totally agree with this! My Hahn's macaw is exactly the same way.
Dealt with this for months. What finally worked was changing the type of water dish and just being really patient. They come around eventually.
