Hi everyone, I'm new to the Toronto area and my little zebra finch, Pip, needs a check-up soon. I'm looking for recommendations for a good avian vet in Toronto or even within a reasonable driving distance in Ontario. Does anyone have a vet they particularly trust and would recommend?
I second what Rachel said about the rescue groups. For general bird care, I've found some good Canadian content on various pet forums, but you often have to dig a bit. For Toronto specifically, I've had more luck with local bird clubs or even some pet store social media pages than dedicated national forums. They're usually quite good at sharing local information.
While I primarily have finches, I've heard good things about services that specialise in exotic pet care. They often have staff with veterinary technician backgrounds, which is a huge plus for complex birds like Amazons. Make sure to clearly outline Pedro's routine, diet, and any quirks he has.
My budgies absolutely go crazy for mango and papaya. I've been giving them a small piece of each every morning. Is it fine to do this daily or is too much tropical fruit bad for them?
Banana, mango, papaya, berries — all safe and nutritious. Skip feeding the pits/seeds of stone fruits (cherry, peach, apricot) and remove apple seeds. Wash everything well.
Quick one — my budgies keep eyeing my fruit. Are grapes and apples safe for them? I've heard apple seeds are a problem but not sure about the rest.
Trying to budget for a trip later this year and wondering what bird boarding or in-home sitting typically runs in the Toronto/GTA area. What have people paid, and what should the price actually include?
Neighbour's budgie got out and is sitting in a tree in their backyard, clearly scared. They're trying to figure out how to get her down safely without spooking her further. Any practical tips?
Thinking of getting a single budgie since I work from home and can give lots of attention. But people keep telling me budgies must be kept in pairs. Can a single budgie be happy with a dedicated human, or do they really need another bird?
