Are grapes and apples safe for budgies?
Quick one — my budgies keep eyeing my fruit. Are grapes and apples safe for them? I've heard apple seeds are a problem but not sure about the rest.
Yep. I cut grapes in half so they can get at the inside, and apple into thin slices. Treat fruit as ~10% of the diet — pellets and veg should be the base.
Both are safe in moderation! Apple flesh = great; just remove the seeds (they contain trace cyanide compounds). Grapes are fine but sugary, so think small amounts. Always wash well — grapes especially carry pesticide residue.
Both are budgie-safe with two small caveats:
- Apple: flesh is great; remove the seeds/core (apple seeds contain amygdalin, which releases trace cyanide). Wash and slice thin.
- Grapes: safe and loved, but high in natural sugar — offer small amounts, halved so they can reach the inside. Wash thoroughly (grapes carry a lot of surface pesticide).
Keep fruit to roughly 10% of the diet, with high-quality pellets and fresh veg as the foundation. We list safe vs. limit-it foods in the budgie diet & nutrition guide and the bigger picture in balanced bird nutrition. Always remove uneaten fresh food after a few hours so it doesn't spoil.
