How do I safely catch an escaped budgie that's outside in a tree?
Neighbour's budgie got out and is sitting in a tree in their backyard, clearly scared. They're trying to figure out how to get her down safely without spooking her further. Any practical tips?
Don't chase or grab — you'll push her higher or further. Bring her cage out with food and seed, and a familiar person should talk to her calmly. Budgies often come down on their own once they're hungry/tired and recognize home.
Dawn and dusk are your windows — she'll be calmer and more likely to fly down. Millet spray is great bait. If she has a cage-mate, putting that bird's cage outside and letting it call is gold.
The instinct to rush in is strong, but chasing almost always makes it worse — she'll fly higher or further. Calm and patient wins:
- Bring her cage outside, open, with food/water and her favourite millet visible. If she has a cage-mate, bring that bird's cage too — the calling draws her in.
- Have her favourite person stand calmly nearby and talk softly. Familiar voice = safety.
- Wait for dawn or dusk — she'll be calmer, hungrier, and more likely to come down then.
- No nets/hose/grabbing unless she's within easy safe reach and very tame.
If she stays out, post her on our Lost & Found Birds portal and local groups in case she drifts to another yard. Most escaped budgies that stay in the area are recovered once hunger and familiarity kick in.
