Hey everyone, I'm planning a trip in a few months and need to find a trustworthy bird sitter for my Yellow-naped Amazon, Pedro. He's quite attached to me and can be a bit wary of new people. Does anyone have recommendations for experienced sitters in the Greater Toronto Area who are familiar with larger parrots?

Hi TorontoParrotDad, that's a common concern for parrot owners! I'd recommend looking for sitters who specifically mention experience with parrots, especially larger species. Ask for references and maybe even arrange a meet-and-greet beforehand so Pedro can get acquainted with them while you're there. It really helps ease their stress.

While I primarily have finches, I've heard good things about services that specialise in exotic pet care. They often have staff with veterinary technician backgrounds, which is a huge plus for complex birds like Amazons. Make sure to clearly outline Pedro's routine, diet, and any quirks he has.

Definitely agree with the meet-and-greet idea. For my lovebirds, I always make sure the sitter spends some time with them before I leave. Also, consider if you want someone to come to your home or if you're comfortable boarding Pedro. Both have pros and cons depending on your bird's personality and your home environment.

Finding a reliable bird sitter, especially for a parrot like an Amazon, requires careful consideration to ensure your bird's well-being and your peace of mind. Start by looking for individuals or services that explicitly state experience with parrots and can provide references. A pre-trip 'meet-and-greet' between your bird and the potential sitter is highly recommended. This allows your bird to become familiar with the sitter in a safe, known environment, which can significantly reduce stress during your absence.

When interviewing potential sitters, inquire about their knowledge of avian behaviour, emergency protocols, and their experience with your specific parrot species. Clearly communicate your bird's daily routine, dietary needs, enrichment activities, and any health considerations or medications. It's also wise to leave detailed contact information for yourself and your avian veterinarian.
