Boarding vs in-home bird sitting — which is better for a nervous parrot?

I'm travelling for two weeks and torn between boarding my (anxious) cockatiel somewhere vs having a sitter come to my home. Which is less stressful for a nervous bird?

For an anxious bird, staying in her own familiar environment with a competent sitter is usually less stressful than a new place. The downside is a home sitter isn't there 24/7. Good boarding is great too — depends on the bird and the setup.

I've done both. In-home wins for keeping routine/territory familiar. Boarding wins for constant supervision and a bird-experienced caretaker. For a truly nervous bird I'd prioritize the caretaker's bird experience over the location.

Both can work well — the right choice depends on your bird and the quality of the option:

In-home sitting keeps her in familiar territory with her own cage, smells, and routine — usually less disruptive for an anxious bird — but the sitter isn't present 24/7.

Boarding offers constant supervision and (at a good facility) bird-experienced staff and quick response to problems — at the cost of a new environment to adjust to.

For a nervous bird, the single biggest factor is the caretaker's actual bird experience and whether your bird has met them beforehand. Familiarity with the person often matters more than the location.

We walk through how to evaluate options in choosing the right bird boarding facility and bird boarding safety — what owners should know. Whichever you choose, a meet-and-greet beforehand makes a huge difference for an anxious bird.
