I see so many posts from new bird owners who are overwhelmed. I wish someone had told me all this before I got my first bird. Here's the honest truth:
Costs nobody tells you about:
- Avian vet visits in Toronto: $100-300 per visit
- Quality pellets: $30-60/month
- Toys (they destroy them): $30-100/month
- Cage (a proper one): $200-800+
- Air purifier (highly recommended): $150-400
- Full spectrum lighting: $50-100
Lifestyle changes:
- No more Teflon/non-stick pans (deadly to birds)
- No candles, incense, or air fresheners
- Kitchen cooking creates fumes β ventilate always
- Birds are LOUD β apartment living can be challenging
- They live 15-80+ years depending on species
- Morning and evening are peak noise times
Best beginner species (my honest opinion):
- Budgie β affordable, small, great personality, 10-15 year lifespan
- Cockatiel β gentle, musical, bonds well, 15-25 years
- Green cheek conure β playful, quieter than other conures, 20-30 years
Species to avoid as a first bird:
- Macaws (massive commitment, 50+ years)
- Cockatoos (extreme emotional needs, very loud)
- African Greys (incredibly intelligent but complex needs)
Where to get a bird in Toronto:
- Adopt first! Check Parrot Partner, HARI, local rescues
- If buying: research breeders thoroughly, visit in person
- Avoid Kijiji impulse buys β you don't know the bird's history
Essential day-one supplies:
- Proper sized cage (bigger than you think)
- Multiple perches of varying diameter
- Stainless steel food and water dishes
- Pellets + fresh food
- A few toys
- Avian vet appointment booked within first week
Birds are amazing companions but they're a serious commitment. Do your research and you'll have a best friend for decades.
